This monograph reconstructs the administrative history of Bägémeder and Semén Governorate General in northwestern Ethiopia, from the 1941 Restoration to the 1974 Revolution. Drawing on archival records from Gondar, the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, and the National Archives and Library Agency, alongside oral interviews and contemporary press sources, it examines regional governance, the judiciary, education, land tenure, and taxation under successive governors-general. Particular attention is given to recurring border tensions with Sudan in the Satit-Humera area, the limited success of state-led agricultural modernization, and the growth of popular opposition culminating in the 1974 "Magabit 26" uprising and the fall of the imperial regime. Combining detailed regional case-study material with broader debates on state formation, taxation, and rural unrest in twentieth-century Ethiopia, this study offers a substantial contribution to the historiography of the Haile Selassie era and to African administrative history more generally.
