Gary Snyder, geboren 1930 in San Francisco, Studium der Anthropologie und orientalischen Sprachen. Von 1956 bis 1964 hielt er sich in Japan auf. 1975 erhielt er für§seinen Gedichtband »Turtle Island« den Pulitzer-Preis. Snyder, der heute zurückgezogen in der Nähe von San Francisco in der Sierra Nevada lebt, war neben Jack Kerouac und Allen Ginsberg eine zentrale Figur der Beat-Bewegung und wandte sich später dem buddhistischem Denken zu. 2003 wurde er zum Chancellor der Academy of American Poets gewählt.
