Ernesto Sabato, 1911 in Rojas geboren, studierte Mathematik und Physik und forschte als Atomphysiker in Paris und Boston - eine Tätigkeit, die er nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zugunsten der Literatur aufgab. Er lebt in Buenos Aires.
