ERC is a software package written in Emacs Lisp that enables the Emacs editor to act as an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client. In 2007 ERC became an official GNU project. It is included as part of GNU Emacs as of release 22.1. Emacs Lisp is a dialect of the Lisp programming language used by the GNU Emacs and XEmacs text editors (which this article will refer to collectively as "Emacs"). It is used for implementing most of the editing functionality built into Emacs, the remainder being written in C (as is the Lisp interpreter itself). Users of Emacs commonly write Emacs Lisp code to customize and extend Emacs.
