On Christmas morning a forty-two-foot Hatteras is found adrift off the east point of Driftwood Bay, Florida, taking water, nobody aboard. The Coast Guard runs its patterns. The town goes to church. Nothing washes in.

The next morning, below the lighthouse, somebody finds a man alive in the wash.

He has no wallet, no boat papers, and no memory of how he got there-only a first name he is not certain is his. And Driftwood Bay does what it has always done with what the Gulf leaves on its beach. It puts him somewhere warm and finds him something to do.

Over the year that follows-the summer families at the inn, the long tables at Thanksgiving, the Advent candles lit one Sunday at a time, the boat parade-a town of shrimpers and bakers, a doctor who makes house calls, a retired Coast Guard chief, and a mayor who has run out of ways to explain him makes room for a stranger who cannot say who he is.

Somewhere up the coast, an investigator is working his way south.

Driftwood Bay is a novel about grace that arrives before anyone asks for it, and about the ordinary people who carry it the rest of the way.
