Biography
Carlo M. Cipolla, 1922 in Pavia geboren, war Wirtschaftshistoriker. Nach seinem Studium an der Universität von Pavia führten ihn Stipendien an die Sorbonne nach Paris und die London School of Economics. Mit siebenundzwanzig Jahren erhielt er eine Gastprofessur der University of California, Berkeley. Später lehrte er unter anderem an Hochschulen in Deutschland, England, Spanien und Kanada. Er war Vorsitzender und Mitglied zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Vereine und kultureller Einrichtungen in Turin, Boston und Rom, sowie Fellow der British Academy und der Royal History Society Großbritanniens. 1980 wurde ihm die Ehrendoktorwürde der Technischen Universität Zürich verliehen, 1992 die der medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Pavia. Cipolla schrieb über 20 Bücher, die in etwa 15 Sprachen übersetzt wurden. Er starb 2000 in Pavia.
