Allen T. Stanton: Church and State, Gebunden

Blurb

Offers one of the first practical theological frameworks for churches partnering with government agencies while preserving their theological identity and mission.

For nearly three decades, governments in the United States have increasingly partnered with faith-based organizations to address pressing social needs ranging from poverty relief and disaster response to public health and community development. These collaborations are often praised across the political spectrum as innovative and effective ways to strengthen local communities. Yet for churches, such partnerships also raise difficult theological questions about the relationship between church and state, the formation of Christian identity, and the mission of the church within civil society.

Stanton offers a timely and accessible framework for congregations navigating these increasingly common relationships with government agencies. Drawing on theology, legal studies, political philosophy, and the work of Alasdair MacIntyre, Stanton argues that churches must engage these partnerships thoughtfully if they are to preserve their distinctive theological vocation while serving the common good.

Rather than offering a simplistic endorsement or rejection of faith-based initiatives, Stanton explores the tensions, risks, and opportunities that emerge when congregations collaborate with the state. Through practical theological reflection and realistic case studies, he demonstrates how churches can remain communities of Christian formation while participating meaningfully in public life.

Written for pastors, seminarians, denominational leaders, and congregations engaged in community partnerships, and featuring a foreword by former White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry, this book provides a deeply practical resource for churches seeking faithful engagement in an increasingly complex political and social landscape
