Die Biographie von Sir Alexander Mackenzie (1755 oder 1764 - 1820) weist erstaunliche Lücken auf. Man kann allerdings heute davon ausgehen, dass Mackenzie im Dienste einer Pelzhandels-Compagnie unterwegs war. Es scheint fast, als habe Mackenzie seinen Bericht zu einem Handbuch für die ihm folgenden Pelzhändler bestimmt. Seine Tagebuchaufzeichnungen, die erstmals 1802 in London erschienen, informierten diese Nachfolger über alle Vorkommnisse und Gefahren, die in der kanadischen Wildnis lauerten. Sir Alexander Mackenzie gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Entdecker Nordamerikas. Heute trägt nicht nur der zweitlängste Fluss Nordamerikas seinen Namen, sondern auch ein Gebiet, das größer als England und Frankreich zusammen ist: der District of Mackenzie im Norden Kanadas.§Notes:
