Animals have always been compelling subjects for artists, but the rise of animal advocacy and posthumanist thought has prompted a reconsideration of the relationship between artist and animal. In this book, Steve Baker examines the work of contemporary artists who directly confront questions of animal life, treating animals not for their aesthetic qualities or as symbols of the human condition but rather as beings who actively share the world with humanity.
The concerns of the artists presented in this book-Sue Coe, Eduardo Kac, Lucy Kimbell, Catherine Chalmers, Olly and Suzi, Angela Singer, Catherine Bell, and others-range widely, from the ecological to the philosophical and from those engaging with the modification of animal bodies to those seeking to further the cause of animal rights. Drawing on extensive interviews he conducted with the artists under consideration, Baker explores the vital contribution that contemporary art can make to a broader conception of animal life, emphasizing the importance of creativity and trust in both the making and understanding of these artworks.
Throughout, Baker is attentive to issues of practice, form, and medium. He asks, for example, whether the animal itself could be said to be the medium in which these artists are working, and he highlights the tensions between creative practice and certain kinds of ethical demands or expectations. Featuring full-color, vivid examples of their work, Artist Animal situates contemporary artists within the wider project of thinking beyond the human, asserting art's power to open up new ways of thinking about animals.
Biografie
Steve Baker wurde in London geboren und lebt heute in der Nähe von Hamburg.§Nachdem er 1969 anfing Mundharmonika zu lernen, schaffte er 1975 den Sprung ins Profi-Lager und hat bis dato Tausende Gigs und zahllose Studioaufnahmen hinter sich. Heute ist er mit Sicherheit die Nr. 1 der Blues Harp Spieler der deutschen Szene und wird als einer der führenden Exponenten dieses Instruments weltweit gehandelt. Unter Mundharmonika-Fans ist er international bekannt sowohl für seine hervorragende und eigensinnige Spielweise als auch für seine hochgelobten Fachbücher. Dadurch ist er zur Leitfigur für zahlreiche Nachwuchsspieler avanciert. Sein einzigartiger Stil ist eine aufregende Fusion aus traditionellen Blues-Elementen und innovativen melodischen Ideen, geprägt von einem meisterhaften Umgang mit der Dynamik und der Tonbildung.§Live tritt Steve Baker meistens in kleinen Formationen auf. Im Duo mit Hamburgs Blueslegende Abi Wallenstein wurde er kürzlich mit dem begehrten Talkin'Blues "Blues Act des Jahres 1999"-Award ausgezeichnet. Mit dem Ausnahme-Gitarristen und Sänger Chris Jones hat er u. a. in Australien, Russland den USA, Belgien und Holland erfolgreich getourt und zwei hochgelobte CDs veröffentlicht. Sein neuestes Live-Projekt ist ein Trio nahmens "Mudsliders" mit seinem alten Weggefährten Dick Bird und der amerkikanischen Sängerin Angela Altieri. Außerdem gibt Steve regelmäßig Harp-Workshops und ist seit vielen Jahren ein gefragter Studiomusiker. Sein prägnantes Spiel ist auf hunderten Schallplatten-, Film-, TV- und Jingle-Produktionen zu hören. Seit mehr als zehn Jahren arbeitet er als Berater im Bereich diatonischen Harps für den führenden Mundharmonka-Hersteller Hohner, und hat zudem eigene erfolgreiche Modell entwickelt. Sein 1990 veröffentlichtes Kult-Buch "The Harp Handbook" wurde von Kritikern als das beste bisherige Werk über die diatonische Harp gewertet (im weltweiten Vertrieb von Music Sales) und seine kürzlich erschienen CD-ROM Harp-Schule ist die erste überhaupt in diesem Gebiet. Steve ist auch als Fachjournalist tätig, und hat regelmäßige Beiträge für das Fachblatt Musikmagazin, sowie verschiedene internationale Mundharmonika-Zeitschriften geschrieben.
