S³awomir Mroek has reigned as the pre-eminent playwright and satirist of Eastern Europe for the past half-century. A sharp critic of all oppressive systems during the Cold War, he began his career as a young enthusiast for the new Communist regime in the early 1950s. It didn't take long, however, until he was deemed such a threat that his work was banned not only in his native Poland, but also in all Eastern bloc countries. After the fall of Communism, he returned home from self imposed exile in the West and was recognized as a major literary figure. This reissue of fourteen plays and ten short stories, along with a sampling of his capricious cartoons, affirms Mroek's mastery of a wide spectrum of styles, and illustrates the development of his talent over the decades. From the vantage point of the twenty-first century, Mroek's questioning of authority, his razor-sharp sense of the comic, and his spirit of contradiction seem as fresh, and as relevant, as ever.
Biografie (Slawomir Mrozek)
Slawomir Mrozek wurde am 26. Juni 1930 in Borzecin, bei Krakau geboren. Er studierte Architektur, Kunstgeschichte und Orientalistik. In Polen war er zunächst als Karikaturist erfolgreich. 1957 erschien sein erstes Buch mit satirischen Erzählungen. Es folgten seine Stücke, mit denen er Weltruhm erlangte. Er galt damals bei der polnischen Regierung als einer der Vorzeige-Intellektuellen. 1968 beantragte er in Paris, als Reaktion auf die Niederschlagung des Prager Frühlings, politisches Asyl. Er verbrachte sechs Jahre in Mexiko und kehrte 1996 nach Polen zurück. Heute lebt er in Krakau.§Mrozek gehört, mit Beckett und Dürrenmatt zu den bedeutendsten Dramatikern unserer Zeit.§Slawomir Mrozek erhielt folgende Auszeichnungen:1954 Julian-Brun-Preis für journalistische Arbeiten, 1957 Bester-des-Jahres-Preis für 'Slon' von der polnischen Zeitschrift Przeglad Kulturalny, 1964 Prix de l'humour noir für 'Slon', 1972 Österreichischer Staatspreis für europäische Literatur, 1987 Franz-Kafka-Preis, in Klosterburg, Österreich, 1993 Hitar-Petar-Preis des Hauses für Satire und Humor in Gabrowo, Bulgarien, 1994 Erster Preis für 'Milosc na Krymie' beim Wettbewerb um das beste Theaterstück, in Paris.
