In Anlehnung an das alte Volksbuch vom Doktor Faustus erzählt der Roman eine exemplarische Künstlerbiografie, in der anhand kunstphilosophischer, in erster Linie musiktheoretischer Betrachtungen, eine Analyse Deutschlands und der Deutschen, ihrer inneren Befindlichkeit und ihres politischen Schicksals im 20. Jahrhundert vorgestellt wird.
Gert Westphal (1920 -2002) stammte aus Dresden und erhielt dort eine Schauspielausbildung. Bald nach dem Krieg begann der beim Rundfunk seine Karriere als Hörspielregisseur und Vorleser, zunächst bei Radio Bremen, dann beim Südwestfunk. 1959 ging er als Ensemblemitglied zum Züricher Schauspielhaus. Er wurde zum "König der Vorleser" (Die Zeit), dessen Repertoire schier unübersehbar war. Seine Lieblingsautoren waren Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Theodor Fontane und Thomas Mann.
