Über die genaue Anzahl von Elmore Leonards Romanen gibt es uneinheitliche Angaben. Es sind etwa so viele wie Lebensjahre: 75. Einigkeit herrscht allerdings über die Qualität. Leonard war einer der erfolgreichsten amerikanischen Autoren, und die "New York Times" nannte ihn schlicht den "größten lebenden Kriminalautor". Etliche seiner Romane wurden mit Publikums- und Kritikererfolg verfilmt, darunter "Schnappt Shorty (mit John Travolta, Gene Hackman und Danny De Vito), "Zuckerschnute" ("Out of Sight") mit George Clooney und Jennifer Lopez. Quentin Tarantinos "Jackie Brown" basiert auf "Rum Punch". Elmore Leonard war fünffacher Vater und neunfacher Großvater und lebte mit seiner zweiten Frau in Birmingham, Michigan. Im Jahr 2012 wurde er mit der National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters ausgezeichnet. Elmore Leonard verstarb 2013 im Alter von 87 Jahren.
