He is the recipient of a National Book Award, an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and many other honours. Barry Lopez, geboren 1945 in Port Chester, wuchs in der Nähe von Los Angeles auf und studierte in New York. Über seine unzähligen Reisen an den Nord- und Südpol, nach Afrika, Asien und Australien veröffentlichte er mehrere überaus erfolgreiche Bücher. Er ist Mitherausgeber der Zeitschriften "North American Review" und "Harper's" sowie Autor mehrerer Sammlungen von Kurzgeschichten. Barry Lopez lebt mit seiner Frau in Oregon.
