Karl Wallinger definierte den verschnörkelten, Beatles-artigen World Party-Sound auf ihrem Debüt Private Revolution, und er wich in den folgenden zehn Jahren nie von dieser Blaupause ab, auch wenn er sie mit anderen Pop-Schnörkeln aus den 60er und 70er Jahren ergänzte.

Auf Egyptology zeigt sich Wallinger von seiner konservativsten Seite und hält sich an den grundlegenden Pop und die Psychedelia der späten 60er Jahre, die Private Revolution und Goodbye Jumbo auszeichneten.

Wie immer ist seine Produktion geschmackvoll und subtil und enthüllt bei jedem Hören neue Klangschichten, und seine Songtechnik ist solide und melodisch, wenn auch nicht bemerkenswert. Es gibt keine schwachen Momente auf der Platte.

Es ist nicht auffällig oder extravagant, und es liefert eine Sammlung feiner Popsongs ohne Prätention, und das allein macht es zu einem besseren Album als das ehrgeizige Bang!

Dieses 2LP-Set ist leicht erweitert mit fünf Live-Tracks auf Seite 4 (Live in NYC 1997 aufgenommen).

Der walisische Sänger und Musiker Karl Wallinger gründete World Party 1985 nach seinem Austritt bei The Waterboys. Die Band erreichte zahlreiche Chartplatzierungen im UK und den USA, ihr größter kommerzieller Erfolg war das 1993er Album »Bang!« mit dem Ohrwurm-Hit »Is It Like Today?« (Album #69, Single #52 in DE).

The re-issues continue with albums 4 and 5. Karl Wallinger defined the ornate, Beatlesque World Party sound on their debut Private Revolution, and he never strayed from that blueprint over the next decade, even if he augmented it with other '60s and '70s pop flourishes. »Egyptology« finds Wallinger at his most conservative, sticking to the basic late-'60s pop and psychedelia that distinguished Private Revolution and Goodbye Jumbo. As always, his production is tasteful and subtle, revealing new layers of sonic detail on each listen, and his songcraft is sturdy and tuneful, if not remarkable. There are no weak moments on the record. It's not flashy or extravagant, and it delivers a collection of fine pop tunes without pretension, and that alone makes it a better album than the ambitious bang!.
