Dr. Christopher Maitland ist ein begeisterter Sammler von okkulten Gegenständen und schreibt wissenschaftliche Arbeiten darüber. Eines Tages wird ihm der vermeintlich echte Schädel des berüchtigten Marquis de Sade angeboten. Zunächst skeptisch, erfährt Maitland von seinem Kollegen Phillips, dass genau dieses Artefakt ihm kürzlich gestohlen wurde. Phillips will den Schädel jedoch nicht zurück und warnt Maitland eindringlich davor, ihn zu erwerben, da er angeblich seine Besitzer in den Wahnsinn treibt.
