Der seit einem Unfall erblindete und frühere Zeitungsjournalist Franco Arno ist mit seiner kleinen Nichte Lori auf dem Weg nach Hause. Aus einem parkenden Auto hören sie zufällig zwei Männer über Erpressung reden.
Aufgrund der Dunkelheit kann Lori nur das Gesicht des Erpressers erkennen. In der selben Nacht bricht jemand in das nahegelegene Genforschungsinstitut ein und schlägt den Wachmann bewusstlos.
