Billy Holiday, geboren als Elinore Harris, fasziniert und beeinflusst mit ihrer Stimme über 55 Jahre nach ihrem Tod weiterhin Stars und Sternchen. Die 1959 verstorbene Jazzlegende war das Nonplusultra des Jazz oder wie ihr Kollege und Freund Frank Sinatra einmal über sie sagte: »Wie keine Zweite drang sie zum emotionalen Kern eines Songs vor.« Sie besaß eine ganz eigene Gesangsstimme. Obwohl sie keine musikalische Ausbildung hatte, war sie eine außergewöhnliche Sängerin: zugleich herb und zerbrechlich, sowohl unterkühlt als auch leidenschaftlich.
