Für Shakespeares Werk begeisterte er sich zeitlebens; und für seine letzte Oper wählte Hector Berlioz dessen Komödie »Viel Lärm um nichts« als Textvorlage aus. Das Libretto verfasste er allerdings selbst. Das zwischen 1860 und 1862 entstandene zweiaktige Werk wurde am 9. August im Baden-Badener Neuen Theater mit großem Erfolg uraufgeführt. Doch weder in Frankreich noch in Deutschland gelangte Berlioz’ »Béatrice et Bénédict« ins feste Bühnenrepertoire. Seine Opéra-Comique stand aber im vergangenen Jahr mit großem Erfolg auf dem Programm des Glyndebourne Festivals.
