Benjamin Brittens Oper »Death in Venice«, gestaltet nach Thomas Manns berühmtem Roman »Der Tod in Venedig«, gehört zu den meistgespielten und beim Publikum beliebtesten Opern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Benjamin Britten vermochte es, die dem Roman immanenten Stimmungen in Musik zu übersetzen und schuf so selbst ein großes Meisterwerk. Nun nahm sich Regie-As Willy Decker des Stoffes an und schuf im Madrider Teatro Real eine psychologisch dicht gezeichnete Inszenierung, die Brittens Oper auf eine neue Stufe emporhebt.
