Das Herzogenbergsche Weihnachtsoratorium

Seit cpo im Lauf der letzten Jahre eine Messe sowie mehrere Kammermusik-Ersteinspielungen des von der Musikwelt oft zu diffus eingeschätzten Heinrich von Herzogenberg veröffentlicht hat, hat sich doch einiges in Sachen Herzogenberg getan, um diesen Komponisten vom Etikett des Kleinmeisters und »Brahms-Epigonen« zu befreien. Und jetzt sind wir glücklich, Ihnen auch das Weihnachtsoratorium "Die Geburt Christi" auf CD vorstellen zu können. Es entstand auf Anregung von dem Theologieprofessor - und Bruder des Bachforschers Philipp Spitta - Friedrich Spitta: »Vor meiner Seele stand ein mit den einfachsten Mitteln ausführbares Werk, das den bunten, stillosen Programmen unserer Kirchenchöre zur Weihnachtszeit entgegentreten könnte.« Und so komponierte Herzogenberg das auf Bibel-, Gesangbuchtexten sowie auf Boehmes Volksliedern beruhende Oratorium für vierstimmigen Chor, 6 Solisten, Harmonium, kleiner Streicherbesetzung sowie einer Oboe. Das Auftreten dieser einzelnen Oboe im dritten Teil, wo Hirten und Kinder zur Krippe eilen, ist von berührender poetischer, aber auch humoristischer Wirkung, sodass das Werk über das Gloria der Engel eine ungeahnte Steigerung erfährt.

Herzogenberg’s Christmas Oratorio
During recent years cpo has released a mass and several premiere recordings of chamber music by Heinrich von Herzogenberg, a composer often only vaguely indicated on the map of the musical world, with the interim result being a movement toward freeing him from the label of a minor master and Brahms epigone. And now we are happy to be able to present to you his Christmas oratorio Die Geburt Christi (The Birth of Christ) on CD. He composed it at the suggestion of Friedrich Spitta, a theology professor and the brother of the Bach researcher Philipp Spitta: >>I had in mind a work that could be performed with the simplest means and would counter the variety but stylistic dullness of the programs of our church choirs during the Christmas season.<< And so Herzogenberg composed an oratorio for four-part choir, six soloists, harmonium, a little string ensemble, and an oboe on the basis of the Bible, hymnbook texts, and Boehme’s folk songs. The appearance of the one oboe in the third part, when the shepherds and children are hurrying to the manger, produces a moving poetic effect as well as a humorous one, so that the work undergoes an unexpected intensification beyond the Gloria of the angels. Herzogenberg himself conducted the successful premiere of the work on the Third Sunday in Advent 1894 at the Church of St. Thomas in Strasbourg with Spitta’s Academic Church Choir. One choir member reported, >>It was an impression that we have never received before from all the beautiful and edifying things that so far have been richly bestowed on us.<<
