Cavalli war der erfolgreichste venezianische Opernkomponist Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts. In der Nachfolge Monteverdis erlebte das noch junge Genre „Oper“ seinen ersten großen Boom und verbreitete sich sehr schnell über ganz Europa. Dies ganz einfach deshalb, weil die europäische Upper Class sich oft genug in Venedig zum Karneval traf – und dort die Oper kennenlernte. Der dreiaktige „Giasone“ (Libretto frei nach der antiken Geschichte von Jason und dem goldenen Vlies von Giacinto Andrea Cicognini) zeigt sehr schön Cavallis Sinn fürs Drama, musikalische Leichtigkeit wie auch einen grotesken Humor, der für die italienische Barockoper ohnehin typisch ist. Diese Neuproduktion wurde eingerichtet vom international renommierten Barockspezialisten Federico Maria Sardelli.

Cavalli takes a baroque approach to deconstructing Jason, the hero: his polygamous and amorous rebellion against prevailing values and standards does not last long - Medea sends her hesitant hero back to his wife. The world seems to settle back into normality...

Francesco Cavalli was the most successful Venetian opera composer of the mid-seventeenth century. In the wake of Monteverdi, opera was enjoying a real boom, and this spread to the rest of Europe because the ruling classes often met up at the Venice carnival. Giasone displays Cavalli’s sense of drama and musical lightness, as well as a grotesque humour typical of the great Italian baroque operas.

This new production is orchestrated and conducted by the internationally reputed baroque specialist Federico Maria Sardelli. It is directed by the young Frenchwoman Mariame Clément, who is currently making a name for herself with her infectious directing in German and French opera houses. The title role is sung by the promising countertenor Christophe Dumaux.
