Die Kombination der Komischen Oper The Telephone mit dem unheimlichen Musikdrama The Medium hat sich für den Komponisten beider Werke, Gian Carlo Menotti, als großer Hit erwiesen. Nach einer Aufführung am Heckscher Theater im Februar 1947 zog das Doublefeature bereits im Mai an den Broadway, wo es mehr als 200 Mal aufgeführt wurde. Ähnliche Erfolge waren den beiden Werken in dieser Kombination auch in London beschieden, wo man sie ab 1948 sehen konnte. Die Aufnahme mit der Originalbesetzung von 1947 wurde von der amerikanischen Columbia durchgeführt und 1961 in England veröffentlicht. Das Gramophone schrieb damals voller Enthusiasmus: „Die Wirkung als musikalisches Bühnenwerk ist einfach unbestreitbar!“
