Die erste Fassung des Oratoriums schrieb Händel, als er für den Earl of Carnarvon (ab 1719 Duke of Chandos) auf dessen Landsitz Cannons arbeitete. Sie besteht zu mehr als der Hälfte aus Übernahmen aus älteren Werken, unter anderem der Brockes-Passion. Händel bearbeitete die Komposition noch mehrfach bis 1732, als es als Oratorium "Esther" eine Wiederaufführungs-Serie erlebte. Das Dunedin Consort und John Butt legen auf ihrer dritten Händelproduktion die nach aktuellem Wissensstand frühest mögliche Rekonstruktion des Oratoriums vor. Wiederum vertraut Butt auf die herausragende Sängerriege um Susan Hamilton, Nicholas Mulroy und Matthew Brook. Als Gast in der Rolle des Priesters: Robin Blaze!
