In den siebziger Jahren veröffentlichten Yes wohl ihre besten Alben. Unumstritten ist sicherlich, dass »Fragile«, »Tales From Topographic Oceans« und »Close To The Edge« die besten im gesamten Output der Band darstellen.

Das ursprünglich 1972 veröffentlichte »Close To The Edge« ist eine Platte, die aus drei Tracks besteht, der erste gut Zwanzig, die beiden anderen rund zehn Minuten lang. Mit vielen Anleihen bei Klassik, insbesondere der Sonatenhauptsatzform, gelingt es hier eine Musik zu erschaffen, die obwohl komplex nach einigen Malen des Hörens nicht mehr aus dem Kopf zu bekommen ist. Eines der großen Klassiker des Progressive (kurz: ProgRock) Genres, soviel ist sicher.

Das 1972 aufgenommene 3-Spur-Meisterwerk von Yes, "Close to the Edge", ist eine Momentaufnahme einer abenteuerlustigen Rockband auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Kräfte, die es wagte, sich musikalisch zu steigern, sowohl als Einzelne als auch als Einheit.
