On his second release for Telarc International, Mighty Sam McClain delivers a powerful testament to his enduring faith: in himself, in his music, and in God. Sweet Dreams is in many ways a musical scrapbook, filled with snapshots of a man whose career has seen its share of ups and downs, and the wide range of his experiences and emotions are well documented on this recording. The Mighty One is a "soul" singer in the original sense of the term, drawing from deep down to produce one of the most recognized and beloved voices on the blues scene today.
On Sweet Dreams, Mighty Sam brought his regular band, with keyboard player Bruce Katz and long-time friend and producer Joe Harley to the legendary Bearsville Studio in Woodstock, New York. In that inspired setting, Sam unveiled a slew of new and equally inspired songs that showcase his powerful vocal style. Backed by The Mighty Horns, McClain updates the Muscle Shoals sound with a fury that has earned him international recognition over the past decade.
Mighty Sam’s first taste of stardom came in 1966 when his version of Patsy Cline’s "Sweet Dreams" attained Top 10 status. He scored with several other singles during the 60’s and soon found himself at the pinnacle of success, playing the Apollo Theater. The rise of disco music in the 70’s however spelled trouble for McClain, and he found himself broke and homeless on the streets of Pensacola, Florida. His climb back began in 1983 when he recorded, Pray, for producer Carlo Ditta.
Since re-emerging on the music scene in the early 90’s, Mighty Sam has been nominated for a Grammy, received numerous nominations for the W. C. Handy awards in the "soul / blues / vocalist" category and captured the Real Blues Magazine "Soul / Blues Male Entertainer of the Year" award given in 1997, 1998 and 1999. He has also enjoyed major acclaim in Europe, winning the Trophees France Blues International Performer and Germany’s "Talkin’ Blues" Entertainer Award in 1998.
Sweet Dreams is a personal triumph for Mighty Sam McClain and brings his career full circle from his early success in the 60’s to the enormous reputation he has gained in recent years. As Sam says in one of the songs, "I’m living in my dreams, as thankful as a man can be." (concordmusicgroup. com)
