1994, im Alter von 14 Jahren, veröffentlichte Aaliyah ihr erstes Album Age Ain't Nothing But A Number. Es war ein sofortiger Erfolg. Die erste Single, »Back And Forth«, war ein Top-5-Hit in den Billboard Hot 100 und ein Nr.1-R&B-Song. Die Nachfolgesingle, ein Remake von »At Your Best (You Are Love)« der Isley Brothers, erreichte die Top 10 der Billboard Hot 100 und war die Nummer 2 im R&B-Radio. »Ich weiß noch, wie nervös ich war, kurz bevor ›Back And Forth‹ herauskam«, sagt sie. »Ich habe mich immer wieder gefragt, ob die Leute es akzeptieren würden. Als es Gold wurde, hatte ich meine Antwort, und es war einfach ein unglaublich befriedigendes Gefühl.« Die Akzeptanz ihrer Musik inspirierte andere Teenager-Sängerinnen, in ihre Fußstapfen zu treten. Ihr Modegeschmack beeinflusst noch immer ihre Fans und andere Künstler. Teen Vogue schrieb einmal, Aaliyah sei der Prototyp der jungen Künstlerin der 90er Jahre gewesen.
