Product Information
Horace Silver went down in history in 1954 with the drummer Art Blakey, with whom he would begin the very famous "Jazz Messengers", a band that Blakey lead to international fame in 1956. However, Horace Silver had already known celebrity, particularly during the time he spent with Stan Getz (1950-51) and then when working for short periods with the two tenor sax masters : Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. Between 1950 and 1953, he had recorded abundantly with the saxophonists Al Cohn and Sonny Stitt, and the trumpeters Howard McGhee, Miles Davis and Art Farmer. After a first album with the "Jazz Messengers", he was involved in the amazing "Night at Birdland" with Art Blakey and the phenomenal Clifford Brown (republished in this collection). Everywhere, Horace made himself indispensable, bringing with him so much dynamism and color. His game of piano is indeed very percussive and attempts ceaselessly to feed the soloists rather than revel in its own virtuosity. His style could be defined as a working drawing of Bud Powell's style, with, in ballads, an obvious influence of Thelonious Monk, especially on the harmonic level. One should also insist on the huge talent of Silver as a composer, happy author of The Preacher, Doodlin', Opus de Funk, Ecaroh (read backwards: Horace…) and a hundred other typical themes of “hard bop” for which he was a great architect. In the course of the tracks of this CD, we imperceptibly pass from the "Horace Silver Quintet" to the "Jazz Messengers" without noticing any difference. It’s the same music, molded by blues and by swing, perfectly "funky", well before funk was born, beautiful thanks to its purity and (visible) simplicity. We should also notice the presence of great soloists, the trumpeters Kenny Dorham and Donald Byrd, as well as the tenor Hank Mobley, great but not impressive lyric performance, who know how to express the soul of this music without ever overdoing it. This record is here to bring them back to our memory.
