Wonderful recording of a great composer

Tomas Luis de Victoria is perhaps best known for his Officium Defunctorum (1605), but many more works by this composer are equally worth hearing. This set contains 10 CDs with many previously unrecorded works or previously unrecorded versions of works we already know. Included are many masses, magnificats, motets, lamentations, the "other" Officium Defunctorum (for 4 voices, published in 1592). Some music is sung by voices only, other works are supported by an organ, and some by cornets and sackbuts. The singing and playing is excellent, and this is an essential recording for lovers of the late polyphony!

Excellent recording of a Bononcini(?) Serenata

Unlike what the conductor believes and despite the attempts of the marketing departement of DHM, this is not a long lost opera composed by Handel during his stay in Italy. Instead it is a serenata by (most likely) Bononcini or one of his colleagues at the Vienna court. That being said, this is a very fine recording of interesting and often beautiful music.

Excellent recording of an unknown opera

André Ernest Modeste Grétry, born in Liège, was one of the favourite composers of Queen Marie-Antoinette. However, his works are far less well-known than those of, for example, Christoph Willibald Gluck, and what has been recorded mostly falls within the lighter genre of Opéra Comique. Andromaque proves that Grétry was able to create highly dramatic works, on par with the tragedies by Gluck. The work receives a magnificent recording thanks to Hervé Niquet, his cast of singers and Le Concert Spirituel. Not to be missed by anyone who loves late 18th century opera!

G.F. Handel's Parnasso in festa is often dismissed as a pasticcio-work, nor is it considered as an opera. In reality it is a delightful little dramatic serenata, and while it may lack a good story line, the music is wonderful. Handel does indeed recycle a lot of music, but adds some great surprises, such as the choir "S'accenda pur di festa il cor". A must have for every fan of Handel's (vocal) music.

A very good recording of largely unfamiliar repertoire, combining songs from Salamone (Salomone) Rossi's Song of Solomon (Hashirim asher l'Shlomo), an extremely rare example of polyphonic music in Hebrew, with instrumental pieces by the same composer.

A wonderful new recording of G.F. Handel's most famous opera, sung by young, fresh voices and with great respect for Handel' score. While others may prefer the René Jacobs recording (Harmonia Mundi), it is most definitely superior to the Minkwoski recording on Archiv.
