Zum 100. Geburtstag von Sir Charles Groves

Er war einer der wichtigsten Interpreten großer britischer Musik, unter seiner Führung wuchsen die englischen Orchester zu internationaler Reife heran. Seine Diskografie gehört zu den großen Archivjuwelen. Die Rede ist vom englischen Dirigenten Sir Charles Groves, der im März seinen 100. Geburtstag gefeiert hätte. Warner Classics ehrt diesen bedeutenden Musiker mit einer 24 CD-Box aus dem alten EMI-Katalog, die allesamt britischer Musik gewidmet ist.

Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, Frederick Delius, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Arthur Bliss, Benjamin Britten: Groves, der noch vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg seine musikalische Ausbildung genoss, aber bis 1992 lebte, spannte den Bogen von der englischen Spätromantik bis zur Moderne. Dabei leitete er bedeutende Klangkörper wie das Royal Philharmonic Orchestra oder das London Philharmonic Orchestra. Die Box zu seinem 100. Geburtstag bietet eine Fülle an großen Werken dieser Meister – darunter auch Oratorien und Opern wie Elgars The Light of Life, Koanga von Frederick Delius oder High the Drover von Ralph Vaughan Williams. Auch unbekanntere englische Meister stehen auf dem Programm – so etwa Havergail Brian mit zwei Sinfonien oder Suiten von Eric Coates. Eine interessante Entdeckung ist auch die Irische Sinfonie von Arthur Sullivan, der mit seinem Autorenpartner William Schwenck Gilbert vor allem als Meister der englischen komischen Oper bekannt geworden ist. Die hier versammelten Aufnahmen entstanden zwischen 1968 und 1980 – auf dem ersten Höhepunkt des Hifi-Zeitalters und in Groves künstlerisch reifstem Lebensabschnitt.
