In many ways Bavaria’s most prominent musician in the later sixteenth century was not a German but the cosmopolitan Orlandus Lassus – Flemish by birth, Italian by training, and Bavarian by choice, holding the positions of singer and then Kapellmeister at the Bavarian court in Munich for nearly forty years until his death in 1594. But even during this long period at Munich he continued to travel frequently, and did much to give German music an international flavour.
'This is a superb record, and Hyperion must be congratulated on such an imaginative undertaking. All admirers of the Golden Age of Church Music, and all admirers of the pre-Vatican II rite, should buy a copy. All will treasure it' (Choir & Organ)
'Elegant and imaginative... the wind-band pieces are especially gorgeous. [The Mass] receives an opulent interpretation that stands out in a rather crowded field of challengers. Highly recommended' (Gramophone)
'A glorious performance... of what must rank among the greatest of Lassus's Mass settings' (Hi Fi World)
'Une merveille' (Répertoire, France)
'Unimpeachable pomp with celestial circumstance' (BBC Music Magazine)
