Some houses are haunted. Castle DeFontaine remembers.

In 1950, eighteen-year-old Bridget Leclercq leaves rural Virginia for Europe after a family tragedy upends the only life she has ever known. Newly of age and facing a future no one can choose for her anymore, she travels to Belgium expecting an unfamiliar estate, unanswered questions, and a family history she barely understands.

Instead, she finds a castle she somehow remembers.

Hallways feel familiar before she has walked them. Mirrors seem to hold more than reflections. Children appear as small lights in places where no children should be. And nine elegant women connected to the DeFontaine Foundation carry names Bridget begins finding in records far older than any of them should be.

The deeper Bridget searches, the more Castle DeFontaine refuses to behave like a place she has never seen.

Hidden rooms preserve forgotten belongings. Official records contradict one another. Graves hold names that refuse to remain in the past. Beneath the beauty of stained glass, gardens, velvet, and candlelight lies a history carefully rewritten by people who believed love gave them the right to possess what they claimed to protect.

But Bridget is no longer a child who can simply accept the story she has been given.

As fragments of her past begin returning, she must decide which memories belong to her, which versions of love were built to control her, and what kind of woman she wants to become once the truth is finally hers to choose.

Mirrors of Darkness is an atmospheric gothic horror mystery and dark coming-of-age story about buried family secrets, corrupted love, forgotten children, identity, and the terrible things people can justify in the name of protection.

Horror hides behind beauty.
