Constructing Meanings: Literacies of Flourishing in Pre-K--8 Language Arts, 8th Edition is a pedagogically designed book that accompanies educators in creating meaningful literacy learning opportunities for young people. Educators Rachel Heydon, Marianne McTavish, and Harini Rajagopal frame the book as both a guide and an invitation for readers to build on their existing knowledge and collaboratively develop new approaches to literacy teaching. The book synthesizes foundational literacy research with current, innovative pedagogies designed for the unique curricular and settler-colonial Canadian context.

The book views literacies as cultural, social, material, and creative practices involving six dimensions of language arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, representing) and promotes "flourishing through literacies," fostering joyful, relational, and meaningful learning that supports individual and collective well-being. Practical and principled, Constructing Meanings advocates for responsive, intentional pedagogies that foreground the liveliness of classrooms and the people and things that make them up. Chapters promote educator professionalism as they address the elements, design, and ethics of literacy teaching, oral language, early literacy, reading, writing, children's literature, and multimodal responses to informational and aesthetic texts. Throughout, the authors emphasize critical awareness, inclusivity, collaboration with families and communities, and engaging learners' diverse knowledge. Interactive features, such as reflection prompts and case studies, support thoughtful, equitable, and engaging literacy practices.
