Nathanael West was born in 1903. From 1924-1931 he lived in Paris where he wrote The Dream Life of Balso Snell. On his return to New York he became associate editor of the magazine Contact alongside William Carlos Williams. Towards the end of his life he worked on film scripts in Hollywood. He and his wife were tragically killed in a car accident in 1940.

Nathanael West, geboren 1903 als Nathan Wallenstein Weinstein in New York City, dort deutschsprachig aufgewachsen. 1924 Abschluss des Studiums mit dem 'Bachelor of Philosophy' ab und wurde Nachtportier, gab mit William Carlos Williams die Zeitschrift 'Contact' heraus, lieferte Beiträgre für George Grosz' satirisches Blatt 'Americana', war bekannt mit Erskine Caldwell, Malcolm Cowley, Alfred Kazin, Ring Lardner, Dorothy Parker und befreundet mit F. Scott Fitzgerald und verdingte sich wie dieser als Drehbuchautor in Hollywood. Er starb 1940 bei einem Autounfall.
