Klappentext

Love, Desire, and Stanley Cavell is an interdisciplinary collection of essays on the work of the American philosopher Stanley Cavell, ranging across the breadth of his output and tackling central topics while bringing out hitherto unrecognized aspects of Cavell's significance within the humanities.

The book addresses Cavell's major philosophical subjects of inquiry-ordinary language philosophy, skepticism, acknowledgment, moral perfectionism-as well as his interest in art and art criticism, most notably via cinema. Written by a wide range of scholars including internationally established figures (Stephen Mulhall, Catherine Wheatley) and emerging researchers, the chapters engage with topics including the relationship between Cavell's work and that of James Baldwin and Adam Phillips, cinephilia, Indian cinema of the 1950s, Alfred Hitchcock, Éric Rohmer, Holocaust literature, and more.

Offering pioneering insights into the subjects of love and desire in Cavell's work, this volume will appeal to anyone interested in Cavell as well as to readers with broader interests in the philosophy of love and desire, moral philosophy, psychoanalysis, film studies, and film-philosophy.
