Young adults in the Muslim world are expected to negotiate between piety and desire. In a web world where intimate communication can be shielded from view, how do they navigate their way through the powerful gravities of God, love and sexual desire? In Muslim-majority countries, asking about beliefs, about what intimacies should be permissible, let alone about actual behaviors, is a delicate, even dangerous, matter. In this book, Roger Friedland and Janet Afary used Facebook to collect anonymous responses from tens of thousands of young men and women in Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Palestine, Tunisia and Turkey in 2012 and 2018. This is the first multi-national survey of the piety, love, sex, and gender politics that has ever been conducted in this region. They also explore the relationship between young people's intimate lives and their attitudes about the political role of Islam. Their findings challenge the conventional verities and provide a factual basis upon which new generations might chart their way forward and get beyond some of the stereotypes that box them into irreconcilable camps.
