Klappentext
At the complicated intersection between industrial aquaculture and subsistence fishing in Patagonia, Eric Thomas finds the success of so-called green capitalism depends on the distribution of public funds to local people.
For centuries, Patagonians have taken nourishment from the sea. In contemporary neoliberal Chile, that practice continued, albeit under the terms of green capitalism. The state encouraged multinationals to take over the coast, replacing heritage practices blamed for overfishing with modern industrial aquaculture. Market logic would deliver economic growth and environmental protection.
Eric Thomas explores what came next, in the process revealing what sustainable capitalism really means. In 2018, surplus organic material and rising ocean temperatures caused to a severe algae bloom that killed huge numbers of salmon and other species. Tax receipts funding the state transfers that kept "paper fishers"--Patagonians now confined to land--out of poverty were suddenly threatened. In response, they seized ships and blockaded bridges, demanding their benefits and helping inspire a national movement for economic fairness. Yet the success of the protest had the perverse effect of propping up the corporate compact. As Sustaining Green Capitalism reveals, market logic never solved the contradiction between accumulation and livable ecology. The state was indispensable, maintaining the engine of profit before, during, and after ecological collapse.
