• in Latin, she analyzes the New Testament and Lukan evidence on the subject of compassion using a questionnaire derived from ancient and modern theories of affect, and compares it with contemporary texts from ancient philosophy and early Judaism. This reveals the close connection between the Gospel of Luke and other New Testament texts and Old Testament and early Jewish understandings of compassion, which is particularly evident in two instances: the discourse on divine compassion in contrast to the pan-philosophical doctrine of God's apathy, and the rejection of the principle of innocence, i. e., the idea that compassion can only be given to those who suffer undeservedly. The author further demonstrates that Stoic criticisms of the affect of compassion - such as condescension or loss of control - hardly apply to the Lukan understanding. A gendered coding also becomes apparent: where compassion is valued positively, the acting subjects are predominantly male, whereas negatively assessed compassion is associated with unmanliness or femininity. The Lukan texts reveal both an emotional script and the emergence of an emotional habitus reminiscent of Aristotle's ¿¿¿¿. The narrative voice promotes a practiced disposition of mercy that manifests situationally in prosocial action. Compassion can overcome hostility and disgust and bring together different layers of human suffering - material need, illness, social marginalization. In contrast to Stoic philosophy, compassion in the Gospel of Luke is consistently evaluated positively, whereas Philo of Alexandria also identifies negative aspects of the phenomenon.
