Daphne du Maurier, geb. am 13. Mai 1907 in London, gestorben am 19. April 1989 in Par, Cornwall, ist eine englische Schriftstellerin. Berühmt wurde sie durch die erfolgreichen Romane 'Gasthaus Jamaica' und 'Rebecca', die von dem Regisseur Alfred Hitchcock verfilmt wurden. 'Rebecca', mit Joan Fontaine und Laurence Olivier in den Hauptrollen besetzt, wurde 1944 als bester Film mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnet. 1963 folgte die Verfilmung von Du Mauriers Kurzgeschichte 'Die Vögel', die ebenfalls von Alfred Hitchcock auf die Leinwand gebrachte wurde. Ähnlich erfolgreich war die Verfilmung ihres Romans 'Dreh dich nicht um', der als 'Wenn die Gondeln Trauer tragen' 1973) von Regisseur Nicolas Roeg mit Donald Sutherland und Julie Christie inszeniert wurde. Ihre Romane und Erzählungen zeichnen sich durch Spannung und psychologische Tiefe aus, auch wenn sie meist Abenteuer und Romanzen zum Thema haben und zu ihrer Zeit als melodramatisch galten. 1969 wurde ihr von der britischen Königin als Commander of the British Empire der Titel 'Dame' erteilt.
