When Birdie Brown dies in a car crash, she is disappointed to find herself not in Heaven. OK, it could be worse: this isn't the worst part of Hell. But the tea is never the right temperature, staircases stretch on far longer than necessary, and all the books in the library are missing their endings. Birdie's memory is patchy - she can't even remember the details of how she died - so she isn't exactly sure why she's landed here.
Birdie's next-door-neighbour, Enid , is a glass-half-full kind of girl, and she's convinced that mistakes have been made. She doesn't belong in Hell, and she's certain Birdiedefinitely doesn't. Enid, by the way, is a fallen angel - at least, temporarily fallen. She's got a plan, though: she and Birdie can prove they're good enough for Heaven.

But as Enid and Birdie learn more about Hell, the more questions they have: who's really in charge? And why are souls disappearing without any warning? Enid knows from experience that asking questions leads to trouble. And as the two grow closer to each other, buried truths begin to surface, putting them in ever graver danger.

To stay together, Enid and Birdie will have to face their demons andtheir angels. And to defy fate, they'll have to raise a little Hell...
