This book is the most comprehensive attempt to survey the history of painting and sculpture in Slovakia in 1890-1949. It presents Slovak Modernism as a logical, continuous complex of the endeavors of artists from all cultural backgrounds; Slovak, Hungarian, Czech and Jewish. In 1890 The Austro-Hungarian Empire was still flourishing, in 1949 the communists gained full control over Czechoslovakia. Art in Slovakia was exposed to many changes in this period.
