Als der Songwriter Dean Wareham, Gründer von Galaxie 500 und Luna, 2003 an einem Soloalbum arbeitete, bat er seine Bandkollegin Britta Phillips von Luna um Hilfe.
Die beiden gründeten bald ihr eigenes Duo und entwarfen einen melodischen, sexy Sound, der sich an Serge Gainsbourg und Lee Hazlewood orientierte. Nach der Auflösung von Luna im Jahr 2005 verdoppelten sie ihre Anstrengungen und heirateten ein Jahr später, während sie weiterhin auf Tournee gingen und neues Material veröffentlichten. Fans von Luna sollten die neue Richtung, die Dean & Britta auf ihrem zweiten Backnumbers-Album eingeschlagen haben, schnell zu schätzen wissen (ebenso wie Liebhaber von witzigem und gut arrangiertem Pop).
Es nimmt die besten Teile von Luna, fügt etwas emotionale Tiefe und etwas Oberflächenglanz hinzu und endet damit, dass es das Beste ist, was Wareham oder Phillips seit langem gemacht haben. Produziert wurde die Platte übrigens vom berühmten Bowie-Produzenten Toni Visconti.
Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips are best known for being one-half of Luna, one of the most critically acclaimed rock bands of the past two decades. Wareham is also known for fronting the seminal indie band Galaxie 500. As Dean & Britta, they have scored for films (the Academy Award-nominated The Squid and the Whale among them) and worked with producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T. Rex) on their lauded debut album, L'Avventura. Back Numbers, also produced by Visconti, picks up where L'Avventura left off, with the spotlight on Dean & Britta's laconic, dreamy vocal interplay on originals like 'Words You Used to Say' and 'Wait for Me,' along with covers of '60s gems such as The Troggs' 'Our Love Will Still Be There' and Lee Hazlewood's 'You Turned My Head Around.'
