What is it about Memphis that brings out amazing and unexpected performances from artists?
Just about every pop geek knows the Dusty In Memphis album backwards and forwards, but Toots Hibbert’s Toots In Memphis is just as impressive musically, if somewhat less known. First of all, Toots has one of the most immediately-recognizable voices in reggae, and legendary producer Jim Dickinson brought him to Ardent Studios for a collaboration that brought his Jamaican rhythm section into contact with some of the finest studio musicians Memphis had to offer.
Add to that a handful of classic soul tunes, such as Eddie Floyd’s “Knock On Wood” and Otis Redding’s “You Got Dreams To Remember.” Toots takes them all and imprints them with his own unique style, still redolent of the islands, but with a down-home feel. When he sobs his way through James Carr’s “Love Attack,” you can almost see one of the Famous Flames at studio’s edge, ready to pick him up should he collapse.
Remarkably, the album was cut in a mere ten days. Of course, with his distinguished studio history producing bands that had virtually no budget (Big Star leap to mind, anyone?), Dickinson knew how to turn on the creative tap and get its juice running fast and sweet.
If you think a big soul gumbo goes nicely with a little island ackee, you’re spot on.
Hipocrates Says: DID YOU KNOW? Toots won the 2004 Grammy® for Reggae Album Of The Year with his True Love album. It may be the only reggae album to feature both Willie Nelson and Jeff Beck.
