Zwischen der Fertigstellung von »American IV: The Man Comes Around« und Cashs Tod am 12.9.2003 nahmen Produzent Rick Rubin und Johnny Cash eine ganze Reihe von Songs auf. Ein Teil dieser Aufnahmen erschien bereits 2006 als »American V«.
