For more than half a century Ahmad Jamal has been one of jazz' most popular and influential musicians. With his unique sense of space and innovative approach to collective improvisation, his legendary piano trios have had an enormous impact on jazz from the mainstream to the avant-garde. Even the immortal Miles Davis was profoundly affected by Jamal's music, stating, "When people say Jamal influenced me a lot, they're right."
Dreyfus Records is proud to announce the release of Olympia 2000, recorded live at Paris' l'Olympia theater shortly after the piano giant celebrated his 70th birthday. Here Jamal offers his legions of fans the rare treat of hearing him in a quartet setting with the addition of tenor saxophone great, and former Davis sideman, George Coleman. Viewing his trio as "an orchestra," Jamal extends that concept into the quartet format, with each instrument playing a vital role in the overall structure. This is collective improvisation in its truest, and most accessible sense. Like all accomplished leaders,
Ahmad Jamal brings out the best in his sidemen, inspiring bassist James Cammack and drummer Idris Muhammad to the full extent of their outstanding talents.
Jamal's penchant for creating superb jazz arrangements of popular tunes is on full display here, with thoroughly enjoyable versions of five classic standards, along with his own "Aftermath." Like the other trio piece on the CD, a brilliant tour-de-force on Johnny Pate's "Appreciation," "Aftermath" is filled with the daring inventiveness and subtle dynamics that have made Jamal an icon of jazz piano on six continents.
In fact, the extended versions of the four quartet pieces (all over 10 minutes in length) provide many delights for those who simply can't get enough of his dynamic yet understated trio stylings. But the addition of Coleman's imposing tenor adds a revealing dimension. Not only does it showcase the abilities of the extraordinary saxophonist, but it displays the consummate ensemble playing of Jamal, spurring on Coleman's exciting sojourns.
An "inside-outside" player in the tradition of so many gifted modern era saxophonists, Coleman scorches on the sizzling "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" and the buoyant "Autumn Leaves." On "How Deep is the Ocean," a ballad energized by Jamal's dynamically percussive arrangement, and the beautiful "My Foolish Heart," Coleman plays with a delicate combination of warmth and intensity, interweaving perfectly with Jamal's intricate and energetic piano.
