If the voice is an instrument, Sarah owns the most beautiful instrument in the world – the most supple, the most exact, the most fiery, with the most extensive sonic range and variety of expression. And if, initially, one may have believed that she would become the vocal peer in Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie’s bebop generation, who are indeed present in several tracks, particularly in the very first recorded version of A Night In Tunisia, the lady was autonomous and talented enough to refuse to be categorised. This disc is the living proof – Vaughan rapidly proved herself to be a diva with the same brazen ease in the world of popular song, with a big band fitted with all mod cons as when she was in the midst of jazzmen awaiting unbounded adventures. Admittedly, at the age of twenty in 1944, Sarah’s livelihood was already secure, principally forged in the splendid big bands of pianist Earl Hines and singer Billy Eckstine. A while later, when she was twenty-five, she had perfected her style and she was surrounded by quality artists, one being the equally young Miles Davis. Here, we can discover the budding years of her fertile and dazzling career.
