Both avant-gardist and marginal, Miles Davis soared over forty tremendous years of jazz inventing trends which he abandoned as soon as they became established, remaining silent when others took up all the space and time, and denying the spectacular aspect of the trumpet – the instrument which was intended to shine and use its strength to command attention. His strength lay in his relaxed attitude and the difficult combination of tenderness and fervour. From the age of twenty, and as we can hear him here (tracks 7 to 10) next to Charlie Parker, who had on this occasion swapped his alto saxophone for a tenor, Miles experienced with nonchalance the harmonic intrepidity of the new jazz of the day, bebop. Shortly after, heading a revolutionary outfit, surrounded by competent soloists and arrangers (already including Gil Evans, arranger of Moon Dreams), he invented an instantly perfected form of what was to be called cool jazz (tracks 1 to 6). In New York’s Birdland, Miles’ companions may have been ‘cool’, but they were also damned well impassioned, particularly Stan Getz, who was heading for the top position among saxophonists and Art Blakey, the future boss of the ‘Jazz Messengers’ (tracks 11 to 13). His arrival at Paris’ Salle Pleyel in May 1949 was met with curiosity, and the young Miles Davis met some of the most creative pioneers of new jazz, pianist and composer Tadd Dameron, saxophonist James Moody and drummer Kenny Clarke. We may equally hear the voice of one of France’s best-known radio announcers, Maurice Cullaz.
