This new selection of recordings by Louis Armstrong is the indispensable supplement to the CD, ‘Fireworks’, belonging to the same collection, which included the impressive series of master-pieces cut in 1928 by the inspired trumpeter and singer. Here, we may appreciate the sides dating from the 1940 to 1950 period, when the mature Armstrong at his zenith, was in full control of his talent and his public impact to the point where he could transfigure any song and attract a prestigious audience from wider horizons, not only the conventional jazz fans.
He is thus found in a great variety of situations, from the big studio band to the combo with its New Orleans instrumentation, as the unique soloist or sharing the limelight with the other soloists from his ‘all stars’, including a few jazzmen who were to go down in history, from Sidney Bechet to Jack Teagarden, or again with suitable vocal partners such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Louis Jordan, with whom he invented, much to everyone’s surprise, age-resistant hits which are still successful today, or took an everlasting lease on traditional tunes or hits from bygone days. Armstrong’s full splendour can be discovered in the two French songs which he recorded half-way through the century, C’est si bon and La Vie en rose in the same way it is apparent in When It’s Sleepy Time Down South, his signature tune, and in I Wonder,
That’s For Me and Lovely Weather We’re Having, in trifling pieces which he transcended in a disarming manner, and it comes gushes out in the repertory taking him back to his Louisiana roots. The technical quality emphasises the extraordinary fullness, the unparalleled warmth of his sound, the timbre of his voice and the stupendous swing which enlivens each instrumental or sung phrase.
