Philadelphia-born Gerry Mulligan made such large impression on jazz music that he has emerged as somewhat of a legend. When he arrived in
Los Angeles early in 1952, he took command of the Thursday night jazz concert at the Haig, a small, intimate music spot, home of such groups
as the Red Norvo Trio and the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Under his influence as a quartet with an unusually subtle approach to jazz took shape. As
Ralph Gleason in Down Beat put it, "The Gerry Mulligan Quartet is certainly the freshest and most interesting sound to come out of jazz in
some time". Since these early days Mulligan's career has taken him far and wide. The original legendary Quartet with Chet Baker, Bob
Whitllock and Chico Hamilton long since established itself in jazz's "Hall of Fame". 1959 found Mulligan on tour in Europe with probably the
finest of the post-Baker Quartets. It is difficult to imagine a player more suited to act as foil to Mulligan than the superb trumpeter Art Farmer
heard here along with Bill Crow and Dave Bailey providing just the perfect blend needed. This is "chamber jazz" at it's zenith.
