In default of being Duke, William ‘Count’ Basie was the genuine king of ’Swing’. Of New York origin, he left for Kansas City in the pursuit of an elastic style which would leave its imprint in the kingdom of big bands. As an elliptic and unrivalled pianist, he lay down his simple and firm authority in the space of a few notes, accompanied by the most flexible rhythm section in history. Adepts in the art of shading, the saxophone and brass sections would riposte or join forces to generate turbulence. Certain stupendous soloists stepped out from the ensemble. As we listen to the tracks of the present selection, we will discover several stars of the tenor sax such as Lester Young, Herschel Evans, Buddy Tate, Don Byas, Lucky Thompson, Illinois Jacquet, Paul Gonsalves. We may also appreciate trumpeters Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Buck Clayton and Clark Terry and trombonists Dicky Wells and J. J. Johnson who were prominent figures of jazz, as was the unerring guitarist Freddie Green, who ensured that the orchestra which resolvedly swung more than any other, would tick for fifty years.
