Recorded in 1966 with the Walter Wanderley Trio, A CERTAIN SMILE, A CERTAIN SADNESS is possibly Astrud Gilberto's finest album. Brazilian organist Wanderley had worked with Astrud and her husband Joao Gilberto as an accompanist and arranger for years, so his trio-including bassist Jose Marino and drummer Claudio Slon-has an intuitive feel for Astrud's "desafinado" (deliberately off-pitch) vocal style.
The trio's playing meshes perfectly with Astrud's vocals, especially on the perfect "Summer Samba (So Nice)," highlighted by an astonishing Wanderley solo pitched somewhere between jazz great Jimmy Smith and the Zombies' Rod Argent. Other gems include the two title tracks, the enormous hit single "Call Me," and an uncharacteristically peppy version of the standard "It's A Lovely Day Today." The CD reissue is digitally remastered and includes extensive liner notes.
Personnel: Astrud Gilberto (vocals); Walter Wanderley (piano, organ); Joao Gilberto (guitar); Jose Marino (bass); Claudio Slon (drums); Bobby Rosengarden (percussion).
